The 79th TEG had been formed by 1992 as the controlling element of the Air Warfare Center, with the 85th Test and Evaluation Squadron redesignated from the 4485th Test Squadron. Prior to the establishment of the group, the squadron was a direct-reporting unit. The Tactical Air Warfare Center (TAWC) was established in November 1963, with the prefix Tactical being removed in late 1991. The Air Warfare Center (AWC) had the 4485th Test Squadron as its flying unit since its inception in April 1971, although other squadrons were assigned for various periods. In addition, the 4485th Test Wing was active for 15 months during 1964 and 1965. The Center acts as the link between the Air Force Development Test Center, which conducts evaluation of new and existing weapons systems, and operational units. AWC operates a small mixed fleet of fighter, attack and reconnaissance airframes.
